CGF Responds to Supreme Court Denial in Snope v. Brown

SACRAMENTO – June 2, 2025  Today, the California Gun Rights Foundation (CGF) issued the following statement following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to deny certiorari in Snope v. Brown, a case challenging Maryland’s ban on AR-15 pattern rifles and other constitutionally protected arms:

“We respect the Supreme Court’s institutional role in choosing which cases it hears, but the denial in Snope v. Brown is deeply disappointing,” said CGF Executive Director Michael Schwartz. “The appellate courts, including those right here in California, are ignoring the Court’s precedents. That failure is jeopardizing the rights of countless Californians.”

CGF is actively litigating Miller v. Bonta, a case challenging California’s own unconstitutional ban on so-called “assault weapons.”

As circuit splits deepen and more courts misapply Heller, Bruen, and McDonald, CGF expects the High Court will soon have no choice but to resolve this vital issue.

“The Supreme Court has already provided a clear roadmap for evaluating Second Amendment challenges. The problem isn’t the standard, it’s that too many judges won’t follow it,” Schwartz continued. “We remain committed to restoring fidelity to the Constitution and securing justice for the people whose rights are being ignored by activist judges.”

Justices Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch voted to hear the case against Maryland’s ban now with Justice Thomas authoring a strong dissent reminding the Court of the recent Bruen decision. Justice Kavanaugh referred to Maryland’s ban as “questionable” and wrote that the Supreme Court “should” and “will” revisit the issue in the next two years CGF hopes the Court does take this issue on to affirm peaceable people’s rights to keep and bear arms.

The California Gun Rights Foundation will continue to pursue strategic litigation until the Second Amendment is enforced with the same rigor and respect afforded to all other constitutional rights.
